Sales tax

Use Stripe Tax

Tax shipped store orders with live rates from Stripe Tax on your own Stripe account.

Instead of keeping tax rules yourself, you can have Stripe Tax work out the sales tax of every shipped store order, for the exact ship-to address. Stripe Tax runs on your own Stripe account, the one you connected for online payments. Owners and admins can switch it on.

Stripe charges its Stripe Tax fees to your Stripe account, not to SKUFlow: a small fee for each tax calculation at checkout and for each order recorded. See Stripe's pricing for the current prices.

What Stripe Tax covers

  • Store orders shipped to an address, in stores set to Tax by ship-to address.
  • Quotes, invoices, pickup and bulk-delivery orders keep using your tax rules (or the store's rate).
  • Whenever Stripe Tax can't answer (Stripe is down, the address can't be read), your tax rules are used instead, and the order's tax shows why.

Before you start

In your Stripe dashboard (Settings → Tax):

  1. Add your head office address and a preset tax code.
  2. Under Registrations, add every state where you're registered to collect sales tax. Stripe only collects tax where you're registered; elsewhere it charges none.

Switch it on

Check your Stripe account

Go to Settings → Taxes. Under Tax source, SKUFlow checks your Stripe account and lists anything still missing. Open tax settings in Stripe takes you to the right page. Click Check again when you're done.

Choose Stripe Tax

Click Stripe Tax and confirm. From now on, shipped store orders are taxed by Stripe Tax.

To go back, click Your tax rules.

What happens to each order

  • At checkout the shopper sees the tax Stripe calculated for their address; the order and its invoice carry exactly that tax.
  • Once the order is placed (or paid), SKUFlow records it with Stripe so it appears in your Stripe Tax reports and filings. If the order is cancelled, it's reversed.
  • Clothing, other goods and shipping are sent to Stripe with their own tax codes, so states that tax clothing or shipping differently are handled.

Keep a few tax rules (or a rate table) even with Stripe Tax: they're what's used if Stripe Tax can't answer.
